Two international teams of scientists have discovered, independently, that anomalies in certain parts of the human DNA strand show an increased risk of male pattern baldness. Scientists have long known that a variation in the X chromosome passed from mother to son is one cause of inherited baldness, but this new DNA research shows that may not be entirely your moms fault if you are losing your hair. It is suggested that as many as 14 percent of the male population carry both the X chromosome variation and the newly discovered DNA anomaly and are at a higher risk of early hair loss. The 40 per cent of women suffering from early hair loss, usually starting after the menopause, will should also benefit from this research, as investigations into the condition continue.

The scientists estimate it will take another twenty years of research before they will be able to come up with any idea of how to overcome the condition, or any effective treatments for early hair loss. It is estimated that worldwide $2 is spent every year trying to combat the condition, although some estimate the figure to be as high as $10 billion.

Asha Mandela, of Davenport, Florida is hoping that NOT going to the hairdresser will earn her a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Twenty years ago, Trinidad born Asha decided to stop relaxing her hair, cut it all off and as it grew back she decided dreadlocks were the look for her, and now they measure in at a staggering 8 feet 9 inches long.
To have the first entry in the new category Guinness officials must measure the three longest in front of witnesses, and then she will have to wait while investigations take place to verify if they are indeed the worlds longest.

Asha has mixed feeling about the hair her mum referred to as “a mop”. Washing uses a whole bottle of shampoo and conditioner at a time, and it can take up to a day for the hair to dry, depending on the air humidity in Davenport. Asha admits how tiring it is to care for them but then says she would feel naked without the infamous dreadlocks.

I must admit when I saw this mentioned in the news my first thought was “I wonder how much all that hair weighs?”, it cant be easy having hair that long and not only because of the time it takes to care for it.

Researchers at Nature Genetics have discovered that, with the help of a new gene scan, they may be able to predict the likelihood of early hair loss in both men and women. DNA analysis of 5,000 volunteers has found certain genetic variants increase the risk of early hair loss by seven times. The scientists have detected two stretches of the human genome, which may be the cause of the condition, and further studies across the world are under way to try to better understand the causes.

It is hoped these scientific hair loss studies will help pharmaceutical companies better understand the condition, and help in the development of new preventative treatments for those who may be prone to hair loss.

{October 26, 2008}   Babies and Cradle Cap

Cradle Cap, while unsightly to look at, does not cause any distress to your baby, if anything, the parent, because of its unsightly appearance, feels the distress. The small flakes, usually white but occasionally yellowish or brown, resemble dandruff and are commonly found on babies scalps, although it can also affect a babies eyebrows.

Expert opinions are divided over the cause of the condition, some believing hormonal interaction between mother and baby towards the end of the pregnancy may be one cause. Do not worry if your baby does have Cradle Cap, it is commonly found in newborns and harmless, and can last for up to six months. In addition, it is not contagious in any way.

If your baby has developed Cradle Cap, you will find there are simple and effective home treatments available to help you eliminate it. However, if you later feel the home treatment is not working effectively, or if itching begins, it is advisable to take your baby to the doctors to have their scalp checked.

What are Brazilian hair straighteners I hear you ask? This new hair straightening technique leaves your hair soft and smooth but does not remove your hairs natural bounce and body, and the best part is that it can last up to four months.

While many people are using this technique to tame their hair, some have had concerns about the chemicals used in the process which include formaldehyde.  As shown in the link, scientific advancements have now lead to a formaldhyde-free version which reduces any potential harm.  It is a costly process but considering you may only have to have done once every four months you could end up saving money, as well as subjecting your hair to less stress. And I’m sure your hair won’t complain about that!

Announced as early as 1999 by Thomas Irving, of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, continuing research studies at the Ian Wark Research Institute are showing that it may be possible to diagnose breast cancer, by simply performing an analysis of your hair.

In layman’s terms your hair absorbs nutrients and other substances via the blood supply round the hair follicle. Studies have shown that an analysis of a single hair strand can detect increased levels of certain elements produced by your body if you have breast cancer. The studies are also showing that if due to a family history of the disease it could highlight if there is a potential you are likely to develop cancer yourself.

There are suggestions that if the test does become widely available, virtually every women could benefit from such a non-invasive test and breast screening could be done by simply mailing in a hair sample.
