An eleven-year-old girl in India, suffering from Trichotillomania, has been operated on after eating so much of her own hair that it had filled and taken on the shape of her stomach. The doctors say that the girl suffers from a condition called Trichobezoar, a psychosomatic disorder that results in sufferers eating unnatural substances. The is was the second time the girl had been operated as she had undergone surgery a few years ago to remove a small clump of hair. Doctors say that getting hair balls in the intestine is rare as the indigestible hair is deposited in the stomach, but it can build to such an extent that the sufferer is unable to digest anything except liquids.

After a 90-minute operation and 8 days in hospital the girl was released on Monday, and doctors say she will need to have follow up treatment as well as psychiatric counseling to try and avoid a reoccurrence. Doctors say the little girl’s mental condition is good and she is doing well in school but she seems unable to resist eating hair. Let us hope that the counseling helps her with her condition and she does not have to go through it again.

Thirty members of a school Locks of Love club in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, have once again donated their hair to help financially disadvantaged children in the USA and Canada. The club, which has been running for six years, has so far raised almost $50,000 for the cause. Some of the girls and the clubs organizer, Mrs. Fristensky, have had their long hair cut for the third time in this year’s event which is shown annually on Fox 5 news. Other students help the charity by volunteering at Locks of Love events and by raising money for the charity.

Locks of Love are a non-profit organization helping provide hairpieces for children who have suffered hair loss due to long-term illness. It can take between 6-10 donations of similar hair to create just one hairpiece for a child. The donations from girls like these can make all the difference to the children receiving the hairpieces.

I think these girls are brilliant and deserve nothing but praise for the work they do.

Researchers at Imperial College London have discovered that prenatal exposure to hair sprays may increase the risk of urogenital defects in male children. One of these defects is hypospadias, which is an abnormal placement of the urethra. They believe the increase in the risk is due to phthalates present in hair spray and other hair products.

They also discovered that taking folate supplements, otherwise known as folic acid, during the first three months of the pregnancy reduced the risk of defect by 36%.
