A 2 Year Hair Growing Journey

The news at the moment seems to be full of doom and gloom the world over, but occasionally you stumble across a news story which is really inspiring, and makes you feel so good and restores a little hope in us all. This is one such story.

Two years ago a boy called James Dal Santo, then aged just 8 years old, overheard some of the girls in his class talking about donating their hair to Locks of Love, the charity that makes hairpieces for young people who have lost their hair due to illness. He decided, even at that young age, that he would do the same, so with his parents blessing he started to grow his hair. A few days ago, once it had grown to the minimum 10-inch length required by the charity, his hair was tied into a ponytail and cut off. His proud mum will be sending the ponytail to the Locks of Love’s Florida office so that it can be made into a hairpiece for a sick child.

His mum says the last 2 years has been a journey that has taught him about stereotypes, misperceptions and gender issues, while making him more compassionate towards others. James had this to say, “It was hard, but in the end it paid off. I felt really good about it because somebody that doesn’t have any, is finally going to have hair”. What a great kid!
